What Does a Destination Wedding Photographer Do?

Documenting the Wedding Day

One of the main tasks of a destination wedding photographer is to document the wedding day from start to finish. This includes capturing getting-ready moments, the ceremony, group photos, couple portraits, and the reception. My aim is to tell the story of the day through images, creating a visual narrative that you can cherish for years to come. Destination weddings typically involve so much more than just the wedding day, though, so choosing the best destination wedding photographer is an important decision. Often, destination weddings include additional events such as welcome drinks, dinners, BBQ’s and post wedding breakfast and brunch events so having someone there that can capture all of these events will leave you with a complete story of your wedding and some amazing memories.

Capturing the Best Moments with the Couple

Destination wedding photographers specialise in capturing the best moments with the couple before, after and during the ceremony and for the couple's portrait photographs. This involves creating natural and authentic images for posed and candid photographs. My style is to capture images that reflect the connection between the bride and groom. I know how important your chosen venue and location are for destination weddings, and I want your images to reflect your destination of choice, so whether you are getting married on a stunning beach at sunset or under a waterfall in Iceland then, I love capturing images that show off your location with the environmental influence of your destination.

Traveling for Destination Weddings

Travel is a big aspect of a destination wedding photographer's work. They are often required to travel to different locations, sometimes worldwide, to photograph weddings in stunning and unique settings. This requires them to be adaptable, resourceful, and prepared for any challenges that may arise during the travel and the event itself so getting a destination wedding photographer with lots of experience in working around the world will make a big difference and take a lot of the stress out of the logistics that come with planning a wedding abroad. My goal is to make the whole process as seamless as possible and to help you make the most of your wedding plans.

How to Choose the Best Destination Wedding Photographer?

Experience in Destination Wedding Photography

When looking for a destination wedding photographer, it's important to consider their experience in this specific area of photography. Most photographers will be happy to offer destination wedding packages to couples planning their special day in another country but there’s quite a bit more that goes into delivering an incredible experience than just turning up with your passport and camera, so make sure you find somebody that has experience in delivering destination wedding stories in a number of locations. A photographer who has worked in various countries will be well-prepared and experienced with handling different cultures, traditions, and locations. They will also have the expertise in handling travel logistics and ensuring that they deliver a great experience, no matter where the wedding takes place. A few things to consider include:

  • Portfolio: Look for a portfolio showcasing weddings in diverse locations similar to your destination of choice. Do they capture the essence of each place and are you drawn to the images they create?

  • Number of Destination Weddings: While quantity isn't everything, a photographer with lots of destination weddings under their belt suggests confidence and experience in navigating the complexities that come with photographing a wedding abroad.

  • Personality: You'll be spending time with them, usually over 2-3 days for a destination wedding day, so make sure you are a good fit.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Do their photos respect local customs and traditions?

Why Choose a Destination Wedding Photographer?

If you are planning a destination wedding, then I’m sure you have thought about the possibility of hiring a local photographer. Venues often try to package one in with your booking so many of you will have wondered why you would go for a destination photographer over a local one.

While local photographers at your destination can offer convenience, here's why hiring a specialist destination wedding photographer can elevate your experience in a few ways you might not have considered:

  • Fresh Perspective: Local photographers may fall into routine patterns, lacking the fresh eyes and innovative spirit a destination photographer brings. Some popular destination venues have weddings every day and so local photographers will be producing the same set of images for every wedding and may lack the enthusiasm needed to tell an incredible story.

  • Limited Bookings: While local photographers might juggle multiple weddings per week, destination specialists often limit their bookings, ensuring dedicated time and focus on your day. Personally, I limit the number of weddings I take on so that I can dedicate time and effort to each one.

  • Language Barrier Breakdown: If communication presents a potential obstacle, a UK-based photographer will be much easier to communicate with before, during and after the wedding day. This ensures the very best experience throughout your wedding and beyond.

Choosing the right destination wedding photographer allows you to relax, knowing you are in good hands. Remember, the expertise of the best destination wedding photographer extends beyond stunning photographs and they become trusted partners and storytellers of your wedding adventure.

Destination Wedding Photographer FAQ’s

Q: We're planning a destination wedding in Tuscany in 2025. Can you travel internationally to photograph our big day?

A: Absolutely! As a destination wedding photographer, I relish capturing wedding stories for couples worldwide. I've previously had the privilege of working throughout Italy, including stunning venues on the Amalfi Coast. Don't hesitate to share your wedding details and date with me.

Q: We're a bit camera-shy. How do you make us feel comfortable and capture natural poses?

A: I completely understand! Most couples I work with are not crazy about being in front of the camera, so I make the whole process as relaxed and fun as possible. I find that creating a relaxed, fun atmosphere is key. I'll use my experience to guide you gently, allowing genuine emotions and interactions to shine through. Your comfort is the most important factor, and I will ensure you feel at ease throughout the process, resulting in photos that look beautiful and feel natural.

Q: You're based in the UK. Does that affect your availability for destination weddings?

A: Not at all! While I'm a London wedding photographer, I'm an avid traveller and relish adventures to unique locations. My London base offers convenient access to many international destinations, making travel seamless. Distance is never a barrier when it comes to capturing a wedding day, and I've travelled to locations such as Hong Kong, India, Singapore and Seychelles, so there's no destination too far for me to travel to.

Q: We're planning a 3-day wedding celebration at a chateau in France. Can you cover the entire event?

A: Absolutely! I love documenting complete destination wedding events and covering multi-day. Coverage can go well beyond just the ceremony and wedding day, and I have packages to suit the type and length of any wedding.

Q: What is your photography style? Do you have a specific signature approach?

A: My approach is best described as "storytelling wedding photography." I prioritise storytelling, capturing genuine emotions and intimate moments as they unfold in as natural a way as possible. I also want to ensure you have some incredible couple portraits in your chosen destination, so I will ensure that we get some stunning shots in and around your destination venue.

Q: We're eloping to Iceland for an intimate ceremony. Are you available to photograph such a small destination wedding?

A: Absolutely! Eloping offers a unique opportunity for a personal and romantic experience and also allows us some additional time to explore destinations.

Q: Are you available for weddings in 2025?

A: While my calendar fills up quickly, It’s always worth checking if I have availability for your dates. Please get in touch and provide your wedding date, venue, and a little about yourselves. I'm excited to learn more about your plans and see if we're a good fit!

Q: Do you offer pre-wedding photoshoots?

A: Yes, I do! Pre-wedding photoshoots are a fantastic way to get comfortable in front of the camera and ease into the experience before your wedding day. I also offer destination pre-wedding photography shoots for couples travelling over to the UK and Europe from Hong Kong and Singapore, and you can check out more information on my pre-wedding photography page.
