Eve of Wedding Celebrations in India | Tom and Vanita's Wedding Part 2

The night before Tom and Vanita's wedding in Pune, India was a traditional family celebration. Both families had come together to celebrate the impending wedding….and to rip Tom's clothes off his back!

The tradition to rip clothes before an Indian wedding is to symbolise a break from the past and to ward off evil. Tom was also covered in oil and by the time the crowds were finished he looked far from the perfectly presented groom that was to show up the following morning. The evening ensured that the momentum from the previous evenings Mehendi continued and it was an honour to be asked to photograph the celebrations.

Here are a few shots from the evening.

Planning a Hindu Wedding in Pune, India: A Comprehensive Guide

Planning a wedding is an exhilarating journey filled with love, tradition, and the promise of new beginnings. For couples looking to celebrate their Hindu wedding in Pune, India, the process combines rich traditions with the modern vibrancy of one of Maharashtra's most beloved cities. Whether you're a local resident or planning a destination wedding in Pune, this guide will help you navigate through the essentials, ensuring your special day is as flawless and memorable as possible.

Understanding Hindu Wedding Traditions

A Hindu wedding is a tapestry of rituals, symbolising the beauty of marriage and the strength of two families coming together. In Pune, these traditions are deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric, offering a unique blend of the ancient and the contemporary. Key ceremonies include:

  • Mehendi: A pre-wedding ceremony where intricate henna designs are applied to the bride's hands and feet.

  • Sangeet: An evening of music and dance celebrating the union of two families.

  • Haldi: A ritual involving the application of a turmeric paste on the bride and groom, signifying purification.

  • Vivah Sanskar: The actual wedding ceremony, which includes rituals like Kanyadaan, Phere, and Sindoor Daan, among others.

Choosing the Perfect Venue

Pune is home to a variety of venues that cater to Hindu weddings, ranging from traditional marriage halls and temples to luxurious hotels and outdoor spaces. Consider the following when selecting your venue:

  • Capacity: Ensure the venue can comfortably accommodate your guest list.

  • Location: Opt for a location that's easily accessible for local and out-of-town guests.

  • Amenities: Check for essential amenities like catering options, decor services, and parking facilities.

Catering and Cuisine

Food is a central element of any Indian wedding, and Pune's culinary landscape offers a rich palette of flavours. When planning your wedding menu, consider including a mix of traditional Maharashtrian dishes alongside pan-Indian cuisine to cater to diverse palates. Ensure your caterer is experienced in handling large-scale wedding events and is flexible to customise the menu according to dietary preferences.

Decor and Theme

The decor sets the tone for your wedding, transforming your venue into a visual celebration of your love. Pune's wedding decorators are skilled in blending traditional elements with contemporary themes. Discuss your vision with your decorator, whether you're leaning towards a classic, floral-heavy setup or a more modern, minimalist approach. Incorporating local elements like marigold flowers and brass lamps can add an authentic Pune touch to your decor.
